SHIRE OF YORK MEDIA RELEASE

CALL FOR PUBLIC SUBMISSIONS

DOG EXERCISE AREAS

The Shire is seeking comment from the community about two proposed new areas to be designated as dog exercise areas.

Dog exercise areas are public places where dogs (apart from dangerous dogs) are allowed to be off-leash.

Currently the only designated dog exercise area within the townsite is located near the entrance to town at the corner of Forrest Road and Great Southern Highway.

At the Ordinary Council Meeting on 26 February, Council endorsed the following proposed alternatives for public advertising;

  • Monger Reserve, Lot 588 South Street, York (West of the river)
  • Candice Bateman Park, Lots 161-169 Newcastle Street, York (East of the river)

Shire President, Cr David Wallace encourages dog-owners to have their say. “Council appreciates that residents need designated areas for exercising their dogs. The two locations proposed are aimed at providing more equitable access for everyone,” he said.

Once the areas are determined, the Shire ensure that signage is installed and bins and waste bags are provided at each location.

Comments can be made in writing to PO Box 22, York or by email to records@york.wa.gov.au. Submissions close 4.00pm on Wednesday, 4 April 2018.

A report including any submissions received will then be prepared for Council in relation to declaring the new dog exercise areas and to determine the future use of the decommissioned dog exercise area.
