SHIRE OF YORK MEDIA RELEASE - READY FOR CHRISTMAS
Residents may have noticed that the Shire of York is getting ready for Christmas early this year.
The decorations installed last year including a massive Christmas tree in Avon Terrace are in place. This year, an additional life size Christmas card has been added to Avon Terrace and banners in Henrietta and Balladong Streets welcoming people to town.
“The Shire is pleased to be able to build upon the Christmas decorations installed last year which were well received by residents and visitors alike.” Shire President, Cr Wallace said.
The heritage theme continues this year with Christmas cards promoting York and the Victorian era (with images that appear on the life size cards and bins) available for purchase from the Shire Offices, Visitors Centre and Residency Museum.
The Shire is encouraging businesses to decorate their shops by offering a rebate for laser lighting for installation on buildings and is running for the second year, a competition for Best Decorated Business. Details of both are available on the Shire’s website. The winner of the Best Decorated Business will be announced at the Council meeting on 18 December 2017.
This year’s Children’s Christmas Party and Street Party on Saturday 2 December organised by a local group will also be bigger and better this year with activities in both Peace Park and Avon Terrace.
“Council has provided $12,000 towards this event and I encourage all members of the community to come downtown on the night of Saturday 2 December and enjoy the festivities and see the Christmas tree turned on” Cr Wallace said.
Younger members of the community can get involved in the Kids Christmas Trail, with maps and entry box available at the York Visitors Centre.
“The Shire is pleased to be working with the community to make projects like this happen” said Cr Wallace.
