The title of Honorary Freeman of the Shire was bestowed on Mrs Lorna Saunders in a civic ceremony yesterday in recognition of her many years of voluntary service to the community.

This is the most prestigious honour the Shire of York can award an individual and was presented by Cr David Wallace, Shire President on behalf of the Council.

Lorna’s volunteer work includes fundraising, assisting with planning of York’s sporting complex and serving on sporting committees.

She played a pivotal role in the development of Pioneer Memorial Lodge, an aged care facility for York’s elderly and infirm residents.

Lorna was admitted to The Order of St John in 2017 in recognition of her voluntary work at York St John Ambulance sub branch and as an exemplary and dedicated ambulance officer with over 30 years' service.

In her acceptance speech, Lorna acknowledged "the many enthusiastic people all working together, making York a very vibrant town to live in". She also recognised her very special husband George "for the time and resources he has given silently whilst encouraging me to do what makes me happy..'

Consequently, due to the valued contribution that Mrs. Saunders has made to the Shire of York’s community through her outstanding, selfless service in many spheres of life, the Shire proudly records this testimonial of respect and esteem, forever binding her as an Honorary Freeman of the Shire of York.
