Update for the week – 29 May 2020

Published on Thursday, 28 May 2020 at 4:24:17 PM

The WA State of Emergency has been extended to June 11, however the easing of restrictions means that York is welcoming visitors again. The Visitor’s Centre is primed for the upcoming Public Holiday and expects to see York active as a key tourist hotspot for the Wheatbelt region.

TINY DOORS TRAIL IS BACK!

Head to the Tiny Doors of York Facebook page for the latest map and clues. The TDOY trail will remain until the end of the July School Holidays. If you spot any missing doors, please let us know.

YORK OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Our local businesses are working hard to meet the COVID-19 safety requirements and provide their usual hospitable welcome and excellent service.  The community is encouraged to please continue to support local businesses as they transition to new operating procedures.  Council is pleased to see new businesses opening and adding to our vibrant shopping precincts. Please do get out and see what’s on offer!

$433,684 FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SUPPORT FOR YORK’S RECOVERY

The Australian Government has committed $500 million to support delivery of priority local road and community infrastructure projects and the Shire of York is eligible for $433,684. The extra funding will assist additional local road and community infrastructure projects to be delivered for York in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Shire staff are currently working on a list of eligible, but currently unfunded, projects for consideration in the 2020/21 budget.

AVON PARK REACHES PRACTICAL COMPLETION

The re-development of Avon Park reached ‘practical completion’ on Thursday of this week.  The playground is complete (bar two pieces of special accessible equipment that can only be ordered overseas). The skate park is complete, and the turf has been laid.  The Shire crew will commence planting of some bedding areas and community planting days will be scheduled later in the year to enable everyone to be involved in the finishing of this project.

Avon Park will re-open as soon as the grass has had a little time to establish.   The playground and skate park areas will remain closed until the State Government lifts the restrictions on these facilities, which is anticipated to be mid-June, or sooner.

CEMETERY CLEAN UP DAYS

The Shire is supporting community organised cemetery clean ups on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June 10am - 2pm days. Please bring your own gloves, rake, etc. Refreshments available both days.

SHIRE OF YORK RE-BRANDING - COMMUNITY CONSULTATION

With a major review of the Strategic Community Plan being undertaken this year, Council decided it appropriate to update the Shire’s branding to reflect the community’s reviewed vision and the Shire’s position as a key tourism hotspot in the Wheatbelt region.

The design concepts will be available for public consultation for a period of 4 weeks from 1 June and can be viewed on the Shire’s website, Facebook page, noticeboard and at the Administration Building. Please send your comments to: records@york.wa.gov.au  We look forward to hearing your views!

DRAFT YORK HEAVY VEHICLE BYPASS ALIGNMENT DEFINITION REPORT

The Wheatbelt Development Commission provided funding to the Shire of York who engaged Main Roads WA to identify a route corridor for a future potential Bypass/Heavy Haulage Route for York. Subsequent public consultation in 2017 confirmed the community recognised the need for a heavy haulage future bypass.

The draft final report will be available to view for a 4 week period from 1 June on the Shire’s website and will be advertised through the Shire’s Social Media channel and on community notice boards. Comments should be sent to records@york.wa.gov.au

SHIRE FACILITIES

The State Government requires all businesses and sport & recreation groups (including dance classes) to complete a COVID Safety Plan prior to using Shire facilities.  A copy is to be lodged with the Shire of York for our records.

At this stage the York Recreation & Convention Centre Bar and Restaurant and Recreation Centre and all indoor facilities, the Gym and the Town Hall Kitchen will remain closed until Phase 3 is implemented by the State Government.

2020/21 FEES & CHARGES

At the May OCM, Council resolved to adopt a 0% increase for the 2020/21 Fees & Charges and in addition, waiving a number of annual charges for businesses and sporting clubs in response to COVID-19 recovery. Details will be advertised on the Shire’s website for the month of June and the Fees & Charges will come into effect 1 July 2020.

UNCONTROLLED DOGS

A pet peeve for many York residents and the Shire, is the number of dogs roaming unattended and being walked without a leash.  Whilst the majority of dog owners are doing the right thing, there are still a number of people who continue to put public safety at risk by failing to keep their dog in a properly enclosed yard or on a leash.

Dog owners are reminded that if your dog is impounded, you may be liable for impound fees and daily sustenance fees.  In addition, there is a penalty of up to $200 payable for dogs off the leash.

Please avoid the emotional and financial stress that comes with a wandering dog and make sure it is in a well fenced yard, put your pet on a lead when you go for a walk or run and use the designated dog exercise areas!
