Johanna Whitely Park
Located in Howick Street, near the Catholic Church and Old School, this small park is named in honour of Mrs Johanna Whitely, an early teacher at York’s first Catholic school.
Established by the Benedictines from New Norcia in the 1850s, the school initially operated in small mission huts built in 1859. The school continued under a succession of teachers until the Sisters of Mercy arrived in 1872 and established the Convent School.
