Weed Eradication Program

Published on Wednesday, 28 April 2021 at 4:02:32 PM

As part of the Shire of York’s ongoing maintenance works, the Shire of York will commence its annual weed control program shortly.  We are waiting for the weeds to germinate.

Weed control will be carried out in Town along verges, footpaths, kerb lines, public access ways and main drains.  The herbicide used in Town to control winter weeds will be Glyphosate and will be used only when required.  A non-toxic blue indicator dye will be added to enable our crew to identify weeds that have/have not been treated, this will last 1-2 days after application.

We acknowledge that some residents may not wish to have the footpath, kerb line or open drains adjacent to their property sprayed.

You can have your property verge exempted from spraying by registering it with the Shire.  This can be done either in person at the Shire Office, 1 Joaquina Street, York, over the phone by calling 9641 0529 or as per the Shire web site.

This needs to be done by 31 May and comes with certain conditions.

It is anticipated that Weed control on rural verges will be carried out in August before seed set, thereby reducing viable seed for next season.  We are expecting rural verge side spraying to continue into the warmer months following rain events to control summer weeds such as Caltrop as well as Tree Suckers in our roadside drains.  The herbicides used will be Glyphosate, Metsulfuron and Triclopyr.

All weed control will be carried out by appropriately trained staff under strict supervision and in accordance with the manufacturer’s safety instructions and requirements.
