The Shire of York conducts Citizenship Ceremonies at various times throughout the year to acknowledge this important step in many people's lives.

Applying For Citizenship

  • Applications are processed by the Department of Home Affairs contactable via their website or telephone: 131 881.
  • Applicants should contact the Department for all aspects of their application.

  • If your application is approved, the Department will provide written notification to you and to the Shire.
  • The Shire of York will then contact you to make arrangements to conduct the ceremony eg: date and time.
  • Ceremonies cannot be held on days the Federal or State Parliament are sitting.
  • Ceremonies are conducted by the Shire President, usually in the Town Hall, but other locations can be considered on request.
  • The attire of attendees at citizenship ceremonies should reflect the significance of the occasion, and a Dress Code applies. For the Shire of York this is Smart Attire and national or cultural dress is also welcomed.

Eligibility For Citizenship

The grant of citizenship resides with the Department of Home Affairs. The Shire of York is not involved in any part of the decision making.
