AUSTRALIA DAY 2024 AWARD WINNERS

We'd like to congratulate the following outstanding community members who were recognised for their achievements as part of the 2024 Australia Day Awards:

  • Citizen of the Year - Rachel Hayes
  • Citizen of the Year Senior (over 65 years) - Dianne Baker
  • Active Citizenship Group / Event - York Volunteer Fire and Emergency Services
  • Junior Sports Star of the Year - Kai Harries
  • Senior Sports Star of the Year - Vicki Reynolds

The Shire of York’s Australia Day activities for 2024 kicked off with a breakfast BBQ on the Forrest Oval at the York Recreation & Convention Centre.  

At 9am York District High School 2024 Head Boy Angus Jones, YDHS student Indiana Astle and Aboriginal Representative River Cummings undertook the important task of raising the flags.
Local Ballardong Noongar Elder Audrey Narkle-Nettle opened the formalities by delivering a Welcome to Country.

This year's Australia Day Ambassador was Professor Yogesan (Yogi) Kanagasingam, one of Australia’s leading Medical Scientists specialising in digital health and eye research. Yogi is well known for the development of an eye test for the early detection of Alzheimer's disease.

Cr Kevin Trent, Shire President then announced the nominees and winners of the 2024 Shire of York and York & Districts Community Bank Australia Day Awards.

The Shire would like to thank those who nominated the worthy winners and encourage you to consider those achieving great things in our community for nomination in the 2025 Awards.
