Matrons, Nurses, Mothers and a Doctor at the York Hospital Heritage Precinct - A talk by Residency Museum Curator Annie Q. Medley.

Saturday 1st November 2025

Join Shire of York, Residency Museum Curator Annie Q. Medley as she shares her research in this presentation on the history of the Old York Hospital and the people who worked and lived there from 1896.
In 2024 a handmade silk dress long forgotten in an attic in Bridgetown made its way to Faversham House, York where it was presented as a donation to the curator of the Residency Museum. This fragile dress, once worn by Mildred Groser, unraveled a thread that led back to stories and images surrounding the family of the well-respected Dr. Somerville Boulnois Davis.
Davis assumed the role of Resident Medical Officer at the Government Hospital, now fondly known as the Old York Hospital, in 1896. Mildred’s older sister Edith married Somerville and Mildred was known to visit them to see her sister and the six young children. Through the discovery of Mildred’s dress, a rich narrative of domestic and medical life in early 20th-century York began to unfold.
This presentation explores the significance of the dress, along with other objects, photographs, and archaeological discoveries from the York Residency Museum, relating to the Hospital Precinct. Piecing together the stories of women and men associated with the building when the site was part of an active medical hub.
