As reported cases in Australia of incidents of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) increase, the Shire staff is working hard to ensure we are prepared for the likelihood of virus incidences locally.

The latest Western Australian Department of Health modelling indicates there will be a higher risk of COVID-19 spreading through Western Australia by late April or mid-May while August is forecast to be the most dangerous period.

The following facilities are now closed to all public access as per latest Federal guidelines:

  • York Visitors Centre and Town Hall
  • York Residency Museum
  • York Library
  • York Recreation & Convention Centre and all facilities at the Forrest Oval Precinct including the Gymnasium, changerooms, tennis courts, bowling greens, hockey clubrooms, meeting rooms and indoor stadium
  • York Swimming Pool

At the Special Council Meeting held on 24 March, Council adopted the Business Continuity Plan – COVID-19 Response for the Shire of York that can be viewed here.   Council also requested the Chief Executive Officer to commence preparing an Organisational Recovery Plan (which will incorporate our Community) for Council consideration by June 2020.

A Community Support Network called YorKIND is being set up will provide a coordinated approach linking support services to those in need.

The Shire urges residents, businesses and workers to continue to instigate healthy and safe practices whether at home or in the workplace. The Government has advised that informal gatherings are restricted to a maximum of 10 and non-essential travel is to be considered carefully.
