TOURISM OPERATIONS AND ACCOMMODATION REGULATIONS IN YORK

Published on Thursday, 23 June 2022 at 10:12:13 AM

As the growth of regional tourism continues, Council is committed to supporting economic development for York’s tourism sector as well as working with local accommodation providers to ensure appropriate regulations are met.

This year Council has promoted York through features in the Destination WA and Getaway TV shows and the bus backs displays in Perth, raising awareness of the Avon Valley to intrastate and international visitors.

York’s range of accommodation providers is wide and varied.   The York Visitor Centre actively promotes accommodation options through many channels.  This includes both face to face and online or over the phone.   Additionally, the York Visitor Centre website lists all registered accommodation providers in York and distributes an annual Visitor Guide promoting local businesses.

Council works with local accommodation businesses to ensure they follow the rules surrounding health and wellbeing. It does so by handling registration of accommodation businesses and regularly inspecting them.  If food is to be provided as part of the service, the business also needs to be registered under the Food Act 2008.   Where the lodging house is sold, the new owner will need to complete the change of owner form.

To be eligible for a registration to operate:

  • The lodging house must be constructed in accordance with the requirements of York planning laws;
  • The lodging house must be registered; and
  • The name of the person keeping or proposing to keep the lodging house must be entered in the register of keepers.

Lodging houses are governed by the Shire’s Health Local Law 2009 – Part 8, Lodging Houses. Registration is due 1 July each year and an annual inspection by the Environmental Health Officer checks that the facility meets the regulation requirements.

The Shire is aware of an increase in accommodation providers recently and would remind any new keepers that they should submit their application for registration of a Lodging House to records@york.wa.gov.au

Please visit Health Local Laws on the Shire website for more info and to access the application forms:
