What Is Building?

A Building Permit may be required before construction work can commence. Building approval focuses on how a structure is designed and constructed, including safety, structural integrity and compliance with building standards.

You may require a Building Permit for:

• New homes and residential additions
• Sheds, patios and carports
• Commercial and industrial buildings
• Swimming pools and safety barriers
• Retaining walls and other structural works
• Demolition works

Building approval requirements vary depending on the type, size and location of the proposed works.

What about a Planning Approval?

Depending on where you live, significant large structures like houses and big sheds will require a Development Application, which will help determine what and where you want to build. The projects require both Development Approval and then a Building Permit. Where both approvals are required, Development Approval generally needs to be obtained before a Building Permit can be issued.
