Election Date and Polling Location

The next Shire of York Local Government Elections will be held on Saturday, 21 October 2023.

The Western Australian Electoral Commission (WAEC) has been appointed to conduct the election as a postal election, for the Shire of York.

Election packages containing information on the candidates, instructions on how to vote, the ballot paper, and the return envelopes will be posted out to electors approximately three weeks before Election Day.

The Polling Place (Shire Administration Building) located at 1 Joaquina Street, York will be open on Election Day between 8.00am and 6.00pm, for the hand delivery of voting packages or to issue replacement packages only.

Counting of ballots will occur at the close of polling at 6.00pm.

The postal voting election package is your only opportunity to vote in this election.  Each ballot paper should be returned in a separate envelope.

There is no ordinary voting on election day.

Voting in local government elections is not compulsory however, eligible electors are encouraged to participate in this important process.

Voting in the Elections

All local residents and owners/occupiers are encouraged to enrol to vote in local government elections. 

All residents registered on the State/Federal electoral roll for properties within the Shire of York will be automatically registered for Local Government Elections.

To be eligible to vote, please ensure your enrolment details are up to date with the WA Electoral Commission by 5.00pm Friday 25 August 2023.

Close of Enrolment Notice

If you own or occupy property in the Shire but don’t live here, then you may still be eligible to vote. You may enrol up to two Owners/Nominees per property by filling in the Enrolment Form.  Each person is only entitled to one vote. Enrolment forms must be lodged by 5pm, Friday 25 August 2023, to be eligible to vote in the 2023 Local Government Elections.

Owner Occupiers will also need to ensure the Shire has their current postal address.

Candidates in the October 2023 Election

The term of the following Councillors expires in 2023:

  • Cr Denese Smythe
  • Cr Pamela Heaton
  • Cr Ashley Garratt
  • Cr Stephen Muhleisen (Resigned)

These Councillors are eligible to re-nominate.

Prospective Candidates

The WA Electoral Commission, Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA) and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) presented an Election Candidate Information Briefing webinar, to inform prospective candidates about the roles and responsibilities of Local Government, Councillors and the Council. For anyone interested in nominating for Council, a Candidate Information Session will be held on Tuesday 29 August 2023 at 5.30pm in Council Chambers, First Floor, York Town Hall.

Under the Local Government Act 1995, to be eligible to nominate as a candidate for a local government election, the candidate must be an elector of the district (residential or owner/occupier) and over 18 years of age.

Nominations Open:

Thursday 31 August 2023 and close 4:00pm on Thursday 7 September 2023.

 Nominations must be lodged with the Returning Officer:

  • at any time during the above period by arrangement; or
  • between 2:00pm and 4:00pm Thursday 7 September 2023 (close of nominations) at the Shire of York, 1 Joaquina Street, YORK

Draw for Position on Ballot Paper

The WAEC Returning Officer, Sarah Fitzsimmons conducted a draw to determine candidate positions on ballot papers for the upcoming Local Election on 21 October 2023. 

Ten (10) candidates have nominated to fill four (4) positions.
